British actress and Harry Potter star Margaret "Maggie" Smith has died. She was 89.
According to BBC, Smith's sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said in a statement that she passed away peacefully at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, England on Sep. 27 (Singapore time).
The reason of her death has not been disclosed.
Won two Oscars, was an "intensely private person"
Well known for playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, Smith began her acting career in theatre in the 1950s.
She received two Oscar awards for her roles in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "California Suite" in 1970 and 1979 respectively.
According to The Guardian, Smith was also married twice to fellow actor Robert Stephens between 1967 and 1975, and Beverley Cross between 1975 and 1998.
In their statement, Smith's sons thanked the hospital for their "care and unstinting kindness" in her final days, and also Smith's supporters for their kind messages.
Her sons described Smith as an "intensely private person" who spent her remaining days only with loved ones.
Apart from her sons, she is also survived by five grandchildren.
Smith became a Commander of the British Empire in 1969, a Dame in 1990, and a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2014.
