The weather held up on the third day of the East-West Line MRT train disruption to allow the installation of the new rail, following the "extensive damage" sustained by the track and trackside equipment between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations.

Photos shared to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Facebook page on Friday, Sep. 27 showed workers installing the new rail at Dover station.

The caption of the post read:

"LTA’s engineers and contractors, together with SMRT’s team have been hard at work replacing the damaged track."

"Due to the broken rails, the engineers had to use mechanical jigs to move the new rails to the location of replacement instead of using engineering vehicles."

"Fortunately, the weather has held up today!"

The crew has also been able to replace the power cables, and two out of the three damaged point machines, LTA added.

"Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding," the post read.

SMRT has said it aims to restore full service on Monday, Sep. 30.

Background

Train service was first disrupted on Sep. 25 morning when a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) train that had been in service for over 35 years developed a fault.

As it was being withdrawn, it damaged the tracks, including the running rails and a third rail supplying power to the train.

On Sep. 27, it was revealed that a total of 80 double-deck buses were deployed for the free bridging services to and from Buona Vista and Jurong East, while 620 ground staff from LTA, SMRT, SBS Transit, Tower Transit, as well as police officers have been managing the crowds since the morning peak period on Thursday.
