Another sinkhole has opened up in Kuala Lumpur, this time near the entrance of the Bunga Raya Complex at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is used by VIP guests and dignitaries when they fly from or arrive at KLIA.

The hole, spanning around 5.4m wide with a depth of 1m, was first detected at 10am on Sep. 25, shared the Ministry of Works (KKR) in a Facebook post.

The cause of the sinkhole is thought to be linked to a sewer pipe leakage, after on-site inspections found a sewage manhole in close proximity.

Part of the asphalt road appeared to have caved into the ground, with brown water pooling in the hole.

Action plan

In response, the ministry has also outlined an immediate course of action.

For safety measures, the area surrounding the sinkhole has since been cordoned off.

The surrounding roads remain passable to all vehicles, and a traffic management plan in the sinkhole area has been made, shared the ministry.

A detailed report will be issued after investigations are complete.
