Young children at the Papal Mass had a rare opportunity to meet Pope Francis up close and personal — and some even managed to snap a selfie with His Holiness.

The Holy Father had been going about his rounds on his Popemobile to interact with mass goers prior to the start of the Holy Mass.

The first to succeed was a young boy wearing a yellow official merchandise shirt.

Approaching the Pope, the young boy listened as the Pope spoke and shook his hand, before His Holiness passed him a token.

The boy then deftly whipped his phone out for a selfie with His Holiness, which the Pope graciously obliged.

Clearly elated, both the boy and the Pontiff broke out into smiles as the crowd let out a collective "Aww."

A few other young children also took selfies when it was their turn to greet Pope Francis, much to the amusement of the Pope's bodyguards.

Mission success.

Greeting children on the Popemobile

Pope Francis' round on the Popemobile saw him blessing mostly young children, some of whom were carried to him.

He even extended his blessings to the unborn child of a pregnant woman, who signalled that she was expecting.
