Electric vehicles form one-third of new car registrations in S'pore in 1st half of 2024
The road towards a sustainable future.
Worrying about where you can charge your vehicle will soon be a thing of the past.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is on track to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across all HDB towns by the end of 2025.
According to an LTA press release, there are currently 13,800 registered EV charging stations islandwide.
This number spans across HDB car parks and non-landed private residences.
In the first half of 2024 alone, new EV registrations accounted for almost one-third of all new car registrations, up from 18 per cent in 2023 and 12 per cent in 2022, reported LTA.
This comprises 2.7 per cent of Singapore's total car population, or about 18,000 cars.
Half of HDB car parks have charging points
Around 1,000, or approximately half of all HDB car parks, have at least one charging point.
The deployment of EV chargers across non-landed private residences (NLPR) is also steadily increasing with co-funding support from LTA's EV Common Charger Grant (ECCG), with one in five NLPRs equipped with charging points.
This initiative is part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a goal in tandem with the new diesel vehicles registrations ceasing from 2025.
LTA has a goal of installing 60,000 charging points in total by 2030, intended to complement the uptake of EVs in Singapore.
Waiving registration fees for chargers
To facilitate innovation and upskilling, LTA will be waiving the registration fees for chargers used for educational, and research and development purposes.
This waiver will be in effect by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The shift towards EVs
A 2021 study conducted by EY Mobility Consumer Index showed that 55 per cent of the respondents from Singapore plan to buy an EV.
Respondents also cited environmental concerns as the top factor in choosing an EV.
The cost of fuel is also another key motivator towards the shift, as told in a 2023 report by EY.
EVs are essentially powered by batteries as opposed to a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE).
An EV has proved to be more environmentally friendly, for it emits half the amount of CO2 as compared to an ICE car, reported LTA.
Charge away
The transition towards EVs is only possible with the introduction of necessary infrastructure to support it.
