A construction worker died in an accident at a worksite for the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link station in Woodlands North on Jun. 27.

Another was injured in the same incident.

Both were hurt by falling steel reinforcement bars that were being installed for the station’s foundation at around 9:30am.

The police confirmed with Mothership that they were alerted to a work-related incident along 51 Woodlands Avenue 9 at about 9:50am that day.

A 49-year old man was conveyed conscious to the hospital while a 48-year-old man was conveyed unconscious to the hospital and subsequently passed away.

Police investigations are ongoing, but based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.

What happened

A spokesperson for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the workers were installing steel reinforcement bars (rebars) for a pile cap — part of the foundation system supporting the station.

The steel bars had swayed and fell onto the two workers.

The spokesperson added that a safety timeout has been called to review and improve safety procedures.

Additionally, LTA is working with the main contractor, Japanese firm Penta-Ocean Construction, and the subcontractor, Interno Engineering, to support the family of the deceased worker.

They are also assisting the MOM and the police with their investigations.

This is the third worker fatality at an LTA worksite in seven months.
