Singaporean singer Suthasini's National Day song, "Nam Singapore" has amassed an impressive 408,000 views and counting, since it was released on Jul. 29.

The song's title is Tamil for "Our Singapore".

In a July 28 Instagram post, the 32-year-old called the track a "new official Tamil National Day song" which she has "always dreamt of doing".

Passion project

Suthasini told CNA Lifestyle that she wrote the tune and lyrics to "Nam Singapore" in 2020, but felt the upbeat track was not appropriate to be released while the country was battling the Covid-19 pandemic.

The singer opined that "there aren’t enough Indian songs for National Day", as the go-to tune for many years has been "Munnaeru Vaalibaa".

"Munnaeru Vaalibaa" was written in 1966.

"Nam Singapore", Suthasini explained, is her way of giving back to the community by adding her "fresh take to the existing list of songs".

She decided to release the song this year as we are "moving towards the new normal, stronger and more equipped than before".

According to CNA Lifestyle, Suthasini channeled S$7,000 of her own money into this passion project, while the remaining S$13,000 was funded by sponsors.

She also decided against monetising "Nam Singapore" as she hopes for Singaporeans to "enjoy and celebrate with it for years to come".
