Restaurants and bakeries often go ham on experimenting with innovative mooncake flavours and boxes but not many would deviate drastically from the typical mooncake appearance.
This year, bak kwa retailer Hock Wong has launched limited edition mooncakes that look like oranges and lemons upon first glance.
Fruit skin mooncakes
Made with real lemon peel and orange peel respectively, the outermost layer or "skin" of the mooncake is edible, Hock Wong confirmed in a reply to a comment on their Instagram post.
The Orange Peel Mooncakes contain dark chocolate filling surrounded by pure lotus paste.

The Lemon Peel Mooncakes contain sweet potato filling surrounded by honey white bean paste.

According to Hock Wong's website, the mooncakes are made with a low sugar recipe and no mooncake pastry at all.
There are also no added preservatives and artificial colours.
A box containing four mooncakes, two of each flavour, comes with a free cooler bag, whilst stocks last.

The mooncakes have to be stored in the freezer and be thawed 10 minutes before slicing it with a knife to preserve the shape. Hence, no disposable plastic knife will be included with the mooncakes.
Unlike other mooncakes, these ones can be kept for up to two months in the freezer.

Besides the innovative fruit skin mooncakes, they also offer traditional baked mooncakes, snowskin mooncakes, durian mooncakes and other pre-existing non-seasonal products.
