Man, 24, arrested for allegedly cutting S'pore flags & National Day banners in Punggol

He has been charged in court.

A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly cutting and damaging Singapore national flags and National Day decorative banners in Punggol on Monday (Aug. 2).

Charged in court and remanded at IMH

According to The Straits Timesthe man, Ahmad Abdullah (Wan Ahmad Yusof), was charged in court on Tuesday (Aug. 3) with one count each of committing mischief by cutting and damaging National Day decorative banners, and for possessing offensive weapons.

Ahmad has also been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric observation, reported CNA.

He will return to court on Aug. 17.

Only charged with damaging the banners at Punggol Walk

The police stated in a press release that they received information about a man who had "cut down Singapore national flags" in Punggol on Aug. 2.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded to the incident and detained Ahmad.

He was purportedly in possession of a pair of scissors and a knife.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police found that Ahmad had allegedly "damaged multiple Singapore national flags and decorative banners displayed in the vicinity of Punggol Field, Punggol Central and Punggol Walk".

However, Ahmad was only charged with damaging the banners at Punggol Walk, as reported by Today.

If found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon, Ahmad can be jailed for up to three years, and given at least six strokes of the cane..

If convicted of mischief, he can be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
