McDonald's Singapore and Singaporean actor Ben Yeo have teamed up to launch a Crispy Hainanese Chicken Burger.
The burger, to be launched in celebration of National Day, will be available from Aug. 5, 2021, for a limited time.
Crispy Hainanese Chicken Burger
Here is what the packaging looks like:
Each burger comes with a sachet of Dark Sweet Sauce.
At first glance, the patty looks like a thicker version of the McChicken patty, but I was a little disappointed as I was expecting more batter on the meat.
Here's what the burger is supposed to look like:
Appearance aside, the first thing I noticed as I unwrapped the burger was the smell of garlic – and the garlic chilli sauce that was all over the wrapper.
Underneath the top bun, there is a mix of shredded cabbage and carrots, garlic chilli sauce and ginger sauce.
Because I left the burger to sit around for a while before consuming it, the garlic chilli and ginger sauce had seeped into the bun and made it slightly soggy.
I decided to drizzle the Dark Sweet Sauce onto the patty. However, you can drizzle it on the bun or skip it altogether.
My first thought after taking a bite: "Wow it really tastes like Hainanese chicken rice".
After a few bites, I realised the combination of sauces was what really made the burger taste like chicken rice.
I did find the burger a little too sweet for my liking though, probably because I had drizzled too much Dark Sweet Sauce.
Personally, I also felt that the patty was closer to a McChicken patty rather than a McSpicy patty. Make of that what you will.
However, the burger as a whole was still really crunchy thanks to the shredded cabbage and carrots.
Rating: I'm genuinely surprised it tastes so much like Hainanase Chicken Rice that I'm rating it an 8/10.
