A 24-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to 14 years’ jail and 15 strokes of the cane for raping his former schoolmate and soliciting nude photos from a 10-year-old girl.

He had also molested another female friend, and sexually violated a 15-year-old girl at the cinema.

The man, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identities of the victims, was sentenced on Wednesday (Aug. 4), according to Today.

He had previously pleaded guilty on July 26.

Discharged from service

The man was a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular when he was arrested.

In a statement on Aug. 4, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said that he was suspended by SAF from all duties following his arrest.

With the conclusion of the court process, SAF has discharged him from service.

MINDEF added:

"The Singapore Armed Forces holds its servicemen to high standards of discipline and integrity, and expects them to abide by the law. Those who commit offences will be dealt with in accordance with the law."

His offences

Sexually violated 15-year-old girl

According to court documents seen by Mothership, the man committed his first offence in 2015 when he was 19 years old.

He had brought a 15-year-old girl he met on Facebook to the cinema.

In the cinema, he removed the victim's undergarments while she was in her school uniform.

He then used his finger to penetrate her.

Sexually assaulted and raped drunk schoolmate

On June 10, 2018, the man, then 21, targeted his schoolmate who had just turned 22.

After having a drinking session at a bar, the man, together with another male friend, brought the drunk victim back to his house.

The male friend subsequently left, but the man remained at his house with the victim.

He laid beside her on the bed and became sexually aroused.

He then sexually assaulted the victim and raped her.

The victim was completely unresponsive throughout the sexual assault.

She only discovered what he did after she went home in the morning and phoned him to ask what happened.

The victim was a virgin prior to the assault. On June 11 afternoon, she sought medical attention at a nearby clinic.

She was referred to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital where she tested positive for sexually transmitted diseases, gardnerella and chlamydia.

On June 12, 2018, she went to Kampong Java Neighbourhood Police Centre to lodge a police report about the sexual assault.

Molested another schoolmate

Three months later, on Sep. 13, 2018, a day after his 22nd birthday, the man preyed on another 22-year-old female friend who was having relationship problems with her then-boyfriend.

The man and the victim were secondary school schoolmates and good friends.

She agreed to meet him to chat about her problems and the pair met around midnight on Sep. 15 at West Mall.

They then headed to Club Vivaa at Jalan Jurong Kechil, where they shared 3 litres of beer between them.

During the drinking session, the man molested the victim multiple times.

He had also asked her if she wanted to go to a hotel with him to sleep.

The victim rejected his offer, and he offered to send her home and booked a private-hire vehicle.

However, the man lied, and he took her to Golden Star Hotel in Geylang instead.

He then paid for a room for two hours, where he proceeded to molest her.

The victim struggled and tried to resist him, but she was unsuccessful.

Solicited nude photos from child

In early June 2019, the man became acquainted with a 10-year-old girl on dating app Tinder.

The victim told him she was 11 years old.

They subsequently continued to chat on Telegram, and their conversations were largely sexual in nature even though the man was aware of the victim's age.

Within a month, he dared the victim to send a nude photo of her exposed right chest.

The victim obliged and sent the photo, which was automatically deleted within 10 seconds of viewing.

Fetish for young girls

According to court documents, the man admitted that he had a sexual fetish for young girls.

He would gratify his fetish by searching for photographs and videos of young girls on pornographic websites.

His search terms included the Chinese words for "young girl" (“小妹妹”) and "female primary school student" (女子小学生), as well as "rape young girls" (强奸妹妹).

Assessed to be mentally sound

The man was assessed at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) to have paraphilic tendencies, but was not of unsound mind at the time of the offence against the 10-year-old child.

He was also assessed to not have any mental illness at the time of all his offences and was not of unsound mind.

For rape, the could have been jailed for up to 20 years and fined, or caned.

For molestation, he could be jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or receive any combination of the three.

First-time offenders who procure an indecent act from a child can be jailed for up to five years, fined up to S$10,000, or both.

Subsequent offenders can receive double the punishment.
