A man is suspected of wrongfully gaining access to his former employer's computer system, and deleting its records, the police said on Aug. 2.

The man, who is 39, is now being investigated for his suspected involvement in an offence under the Computer Misuse Act.

The police said that a representative of the employer, a local courier services company, reported the matter to the police on Jul. 29.

The company claimed that someone had accessed their company's server and deleted 190 digital records.

This rendered the company unable to fulfil their customers' orders.

Officers from Woodlands Police Division then established the identity of the man on Jul. 30, within 24 hours of the report being lodged.

A laptop which was used in the commission of the alleged offence was seized, the police said.

The offence of unauthorised modification of computer material carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.

Repeat offenders face harsher penalties of imprisonment for up to five years, a fine of up to S$20,000, or both.
