As borders remain closed, many foreigners had to adapt their living arrangements to continue working in Singapore.

Some were lucky enough to have nice landlords and found a home away from home while others, like Wong Foong Ying's elder sister, were not as fortunate.

Wong recently took to the Let's Go, Singapore (走，新加坡) Facebook group with a lengthy post detailing her elder's sister experience with a landlord in Hougang named Desmond.

Wong's sister decided to take on one-year-long tenancy after a satisfactory viewing of the room at Block 416 Hougang Avenue 10.

It was only then Desmond, the landlord, revealed that the house was installed with CCTV surveillance equipment.

Despite this, Wong wrote that her sister proceeded with the rental agreement since the contract had been signed.

According to Wong, the landlord used the CCTV to monitor her sister's every movement.

Using the CCTV, the landlord learnt that Wong's sister would use the toilet every two to three hours.

Citing the need to conserve water, Desmond told Wong's sister to minimise the frequency of her toilet visits.

Once, the landlord was so frustrated with what he deemed to be excessive toilet usage that he allegedly threatened to raise the rental fees while Wong's sister was in the toilet.

Through the CCTV, Wong's sister was also "caught" using another setting on the washing machine.

According to Wong, her sister had tweaked the setting to save water while doing her laundry. The landlord allegedly gave Wong's sister an earful for this.

Bullied and evicted tenant

According to Wong, the landlord allegedly subjected her sister to other acts of aggression, including prohibiting her from leaving her room whenever he had visitors, and calling her "shameless" and "disgusting".

The aggression culminated on June 18, when the landlord and his wife once again accused Wong's sister of excessive water and electrical usage, citing that she had too many clothes to wash and used the toilet too frequently.

Wong wrote that her sister was at the receiving end of her landlord's abusive verbal barrage.

Between the landlord and his wife, Wong's sister was never able to get a word in edgewise besides reminding her landlords of their tenancy agreement.

According to Wong, her sister tried to head back to her room to avoid an altercation but she was blocked by the couple, who suddenly demanded that she leave immediately.

The landlord subsequently called the police to the house, where they negotiated with the landlord to give Wong's sister three days to move out.

However, within a few hours, the landlord started hounding Wong's sister to leave and heckled her by knocking on her door repeatedly, according to Wong.

Left without a choice, Wong's sister evacuated the premises the next morning on June 19. According to Wong, the landlord refused to return her sister's deposit and the remaining month's worth of rental fee.
