A 51-year-old man has been arrested for stealing prayer urns from two homes in Jalan Bukit Merah.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) responded to reports that two prayer urns had been stolen from two residential units in Bukit Merah on Monday (June 7).

Police officers from Central and Clementi Police Division then identified the suspect and arrested him the same day, with the aid of images from police cameras.

Preliminary investigations found that the man is believed to have been involved in other similar cases of theft of metal urns in the neighbourhood.

Other residents also found prayer urns missing

Member of Parliament (MP) for Radin Mas Melvin Yong also put up a Facebook post on Sunday (June 6), stating that a resident alerted him to the theft of a prayer urn outside his flat, which had been placed there for more than a decade.

Yong said after visiting the block that he discovered that several other residents had also found their prayer urns missing, or have discovered visible attempts to take the metal urns.

According to the SPF, police investigations are currently ongoing.

If convicted of theft, the man could be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
