An incident at SMRT's Ang Mo Kio bus depot on the morning of Jun. 6 left one man dead and another injured.

The two men were both SMRT technicians.

Car jack supporting bus gave way

The accident occurred when the two men were working under a vehicle and one of the two car jacks holding it up collapsed, causing the vehicle to fall on the workers, reported The Straits Times from an alert by the Workplace Safety and Health Council.

Venkatesan P V, General Manager of SMRT's Automotive Services, told Mothership that the two staff were carrying out repair work for a mini-bus at the time.

Responding to Mothership's queries, police confirmed that they received a call for assistance around 9:40am on Jun. 6 to 6 Ang Mo Kio Street 62, the Ang Mo Kio SMRT bus depot.

Two men, aged 43 and 44 years old, were conveyed to the hospital.

The 44-year-old was conscious when conveyed, but the 43-year-old was unconscious, and subsequently died from his injuries.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) also confirmed with Mothership that two people were conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

One had sustained a serious head injury, while the other complained of chest pain, said the SCDF.

Police investigations ongoing

Venkatesan said:

"We are saddened that one of [the staff], an Automotive Technical Officer, succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital.

We have conveyed our deepest condolences to the staff’s family and are providing assistance and support at this very difficult time."

The other staff has since been discharged from the hospital and is on medical leave, Venkatesan added, and SMRT is providing care and support to him.

Police investigations into the unnatural death are ongoing.

Venkatesan said that SMRT is currently assisting the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the police with investigations.

In addition, a Stop Work Order has been issued to the Automotive Services commercial repair centre at Ang Mo Kio Depot. Other automotive workshops also conducted a safety time-out, in order to emphasise workplace safety, he said.
