A 57-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to 14 months' jail on Monday (May 3) for molesting his stepdaughter in 2019.
Victim trusted her stepfather
Both the man and the victim cannot be named due to a court imposed a gag order.
According to court documents seen by Mothership, the victim is 17 years old now.
However, she was 15 when the man committed the offence.
The man had married the victim's mother in 2008 and the three of them lived together.
Court documents stated that the victim had a good relationship with the man and would regard him as her own father. She also trusted him.
Asked the victim to remove her clothing for the massage
One afternoon in early 2019, the man was alone at home with the victim.
As the victim did not sleep properly the day before, she felt some pain in her lower back.
As such, she asked the man for a massage to ease the pain.
The man agreed and asked the victim to remove her clothing, saying that it's so he would be able to massage her.
The victim did not think anything amiss and obliged by removing her clothing and laying on her mattress, face down.
The man then sat to the victim’s right and began using both his hands to massage her back with baby lotion for about 10 to 20 minutes.
Molested her while massaging her
After massaging the victim’s back, the man slid his hands under the victim’s stomach and up over her breasts.
The victim was confused and did not know what the man was doing, so she remained silent.
The man then began to massage the sides of the victim's body, lowering his hands until he reached her buttocks.
He then touched the victim’s genitals.
The victim felt uncomfortable and told the man that it was ticklish.
It was only at this point that the man stopped and told the victim to bathe.
Victim remained silent until he molested her again
After the victim bathed, the man told her not to tell anyone what had happened, and the victim agreed.
She continued to remain silent about the man’s actions until a few months after when the man molested her a second time.
The victim subsequently told her mother about what had happened, and her mother proceeded to confront the man.
However, the family decided not to lodge a police report as they were concerned about his age and health, and did not want to get him into trouble, court documents stated.
They eventually decided to lodge a report after a child protection officer found out about the incidents during an interview with the victim.
Offered bail and will serve his sentence on May 18
The prosecution had sought a 15 months' imprisonment for the man, noting that the victim was vulnerable as she was only 15 at the time of the offence.
The prosecution also stated that there was a serious abuse of trust on the the man's part as the victim's stepfather.
The man has been offered bail for S$15,000, and is expected to begin serving his sentence on May 18, according to ST.
For each count of molestation, he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
He cannot be caned as he is above 50 years old.
