Malaysia will be entering a full lockdown for two weeks, starting from June 1.
This was announced by the special National Security Council led by the Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on May 28.
Only essential services and economic sectors will be allowed to operate during the full lockdown.
The lockdown will last till June 14.
Muhyiddin cited the presence of more transmissible variants and rising number of death cases as reasons driving the decision.
He also said that hospital capacity nationwide to treat Covid-19 patients is becoming "increasingly limited."
He urged people to stay at home to flatten the Covid-19 infection curve.
The government will allow more sectors to reopen in a second phase that will last for four weeks, if the lockdown reduces the Covid-19 cases effectively in the first two weeks of June, he added.

Just few days ago, Muhyiddin had said on May 23 that a full lockdown will cause a significant impact on Malaysia's economic recovery.
The announcement of a full lockdown came after Malaysia's daily number of Covid-19 cases crossed the 8,000 mark on May 28.
