The Spanish football league La Liga is investigating Lionel Messi and his FC Barcelona teammates for possibly breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

Hosted team lunch at his house

According to The Associated Press (AP), Messi had hosted a team lunch for his teammates and their partners at his house on Monday (May 3).

Players could be heard chanting "campeones (champions)" from inside the house.

The purpose of the gathering, as reported by AP News, was to help the players bond ahead of their next match against Atletico Madrid. If Barcelona win, they move into first place.

Besides La Liga, the local authorities are also checking if any Covid-19 regulations were broken during the gathering.

In Catalonia, there is a limit of only up to six persons per group for social gatherings, unless they live together.

Allegedly maintained social distancing

Sources told ESPN that social distancing regulations were maintained during the gathering.

The sources claimed that the players and their partners had spent the afternoon outside and at separate tables.

According to ESPN, a spokesman from Barcelona said that the team had not received any notification of an investigation from La Liga or the local authorities.

The spokesman added that it was an issue for the players to deal with.

AP News reported that sanctions against the players and the football club are possible, but they are not likely to be severe.
