The Ellen DeGeneres talk show will come to an end in 2022.

The departure had long been set, going as far back as 2018/2019, according to an interview by The Hollywood Reporter

However, its wrap may be timely, as the show has experienced a significant drop in ratings with more than a million viewers lost, The New York Times (NYT) reported.

NYT noted that the numbers began to slide after accusations of a toxic workplace surfaced last year.

DeGeneres was labelled as "one of the meanest people alive" by the comedian who opened the floodgates to diva stories involving the talk show host, while co-workers told Buzzfeed News that they had experienced racism and intimidation on set from the show's executive producers and senior managers.

Three high-level producers were fired following an investigation by Warner Bros., and DeGeneres herself apologised some months later in September 2020.

The talk show debuted in 2003, and is currently at 18 seasons. The upcoming 19th season will be its last.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” Degeneres told The Hollywood Reporter.

The host and comedian clarified that she was not quitting the show over the scandal.

"It [the accusations] almost impacted the show. It was very hurtful to me. I mean, very. But if I was quitting the show because of that, I wouldn’t have come back this season."
