A 49-year-old cyclist was killed in an accident with a shuttle bus in Nanyang Technological University on May 3 night.

The incident happened at around 8:40pm along Nanyang Crescent, before the junction with Nanyang Drive.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic.

Fell off the bicycle before accident happened

The Straits Times (ST) identified the deceased as Wong Siew Yuen, a factory supervisor.

What happened

It was reported that Wong was cycling with a friend in the campus at that time.

The friend, who was described to be overwhelmed with guilt, told Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min) that he was riding in front of Wong and would occasionally turn back to check on her.

At that time, they were riding down a slope and the terrain was uneven. Wong fell off her bicycle and an oncoming bus failed to avoid her.

Family hopes to attend her funeral

Shin Min spoke to Wong's husband, Ye Zicheng, who is in Malaysia with their 19-year-old son.

Ye said that Wong bought the bicycle just a week before the tragedy.

Ye also told Shin Min that he hopes to attend Wong's funeral despite border restrictions.
