Malaysian officials mulling over full lockdown

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded new daily high in Covid-19 cases and deaths.

There were 6,806 cases and a record high number of deaths on May 20; 59 patients died from Covid-19.

This is despite the third movement control order (MCO) that took effect earlier this month.

The MCO had prohibited inter-district travel and the closure of school to contain the spread of the virus.

Prime Minister's Department minister Takiyuddin Hassan said that a nationwide full-scale MCO will be assessed and decided with the Covid-19 National Security Council (MKN) on May 21, according to The Star.

Malaysia's fourth largest city, Ipoh, will be entering a full lockdown for two weeks, starting from tomorrow (May 22).

Hospital beds are running out

With the alarming increase in the daily Covid-19 infections rate, Malaysia's Ministry of Health urged private hospitals to increase the amount of beds to treat patients that have contracted the virus.

More than 70 per cent ICU beds in government hospitals are occupied and about 70 - 90 per cent of general ward beds are also occupied.
