Polls have closed in Florida, one of the key battleground states in the United States presidential election.

Florida a potentially pivotal state

Following a tight race, incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump has won the state with 5,644,988 votes, edging out Democratic challenger Joe Biden by 3.5 per cent, according to Associated Press.

Trump's victory in Florida has won him 29 electoral votes.

He had also won Florida by 1.2 per cent in 2016.

Florida is significant because it is the swing state with the largest population, as well as the most number of electoral college votes.

The state has voted with the eventual winner in all but one election since 1964, in 1992 when they went for Bush sr instead of eventual winner Bill Clinton.

Trump has declared himself to be a Florida resident, and voted in person in Palm Beach County in October.

Trump won big in Florida in 2016

Back in 2016, Trump went into Election Day in Florida with less than 250,000 votes behind then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

But he eventually won when about 360,000 more voters voted for him over Clinton.

If Trump wants to get reelected, he must win Florida.

In the 2000 election, the state saw an intense ballot recount dispute that was later settled in the Supreme Court.

Republican George W. Bush eventually claimed victory over Democrat Al Gore by a margin of just 0.009 per cent, according to CNBC.

The 2020 election has seen the highest turnout in a century, with more than 100 million Americans having cast their ballots in early voting before Election Day on Nov. 3.

Votes are still being counted nationwide.

As of 1:24pm Singapore time, Biden is leading with 223 electoral votes to Trump's 145.

Trump is also leading in other pivotal swing states like North Carolina, Texas and Ohio.
