The new-look People's Action Party (PAP) team for Sengkang GRC is not taking a victory for granted.

During a press conference on July 2, Mothership asked the team of Ng Chee Meng, Lam Pin Min, Amrin Amin and newcomer Raymond Lye what they thought of their opponents from the Workers' Party.

They take on a team comprising Jamus Lim, Raeesah Khan, Louis Chua and He Ting Ru.

We don't take our voters for granted

Lam, Senior Minister of State for Health and Transport, answered. He said that he had contested the last three elections, always against the Workers' Party and his principle is always the same, "we take our opponents very seriously."

"Whether they are young, or whether they are old, whatever background they come from, we will take our opponents very seriously. And we shouldn't take the votes of our voters for granted.

And therefore you can see we have put in a lot of effort, over the past years that we have been looking after our own areas to make sure our residents' needs are well-looked after."

He added that Sengkang is a relatively new constituency where the residents are relatively younger, and said that the "Sengkang Together" movement is how they can engage their residents.

Lam also said the team will do their best to win every single vote in Sengkang.

The team did not specifically mention any of their Workers' Party opponents in detail.

New town council to be set up

If the PAP team does win, they aim to set up a Sengkang GRC town council within three months, given that Sengkang is a newly-formed GRC. Lye, a lawyer with "20 years of Town Council experience" will be spearheading this effort.

However in light of the pandemic, Ng said "as soon as possible, within three months if not delayed by (the) Covid situation."

It also aims to build more facilities in the area such as playgrounds, fitness zones, barrier-free access routes, covered linkways, community gardens, and more.

The Sengkang Together movement is also intended for residents to play an active role in community programmes and development plans by sharing their views.
