Since the Constituency Political Broadcast on July 6, interest in the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) has risen.

One candidate in particular, appears to have caught the internet's attention.

Familiar face?

Kelvin Ong Soon Huat is among the team of five from SDA, including party leader Desmond Lim Bak Chuan, who will be contesting in Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

Ong prefaced his speech yesterday by saying that he isn't a "storyteller" or "professional presenter".

"I'm just like one of you," he said.

Ong touched on bread and butter issues, such as the rising cost of living, as well CPF and retirement.

And it seems many netizens have certainly found him relatable, and perhaps, slightly familiar.

Here are some comments from the live feed.

So relatable and down-to-earth people find Ong, that a fan-made poster was created.

"Nice la but don't portray me as a gangster"

When Mothership spoke to Ong, he said that in spite of his appearance, which some might find fierce, he was actually friendly. "Anybody can talk to me," he said.

He also admitted he was shocked when he first saw the fan-made photos, as he did not expect anyone to find such photos of him and edit them in such a way.

"The quality of the [poster] is quite nice la, but don't put me as a mafia (gangster)."

Ong, who revealed that he started volunteering with SDA during their campaign in the 2015 election, said that he was contributing by serving residents on the ground, and that all the candidates in GE2020 were simply trying their best.

When asked about what he thought were his chances in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, especially considering the three-cornered fight they would be having against the People's Action Party and People's Voice, Ong said he and his team are very confident, as they have been walking the ground for 13 years.

Works as food delivery rider part-time

The 34-year-old shared that friends and family were surprised when they found out about decision to contest, especially his wife.

As a result of the hustings, he has had lesser time to spend with family. This doesn't deter him however:

"But I think it's worth it. It's not about me or you alone. We're doing it for the better of everyone."

According to SDA, Ong had to cut short his education and start working at a young age to care for his family, but "through hard work and constant skills and language upgrading, he is now a manager of a facilities management company".

His background, Ong said, is what he thinks will resonate with audiences online and residents on the ground.

Ong, who revealed that he "tried out" as a food delivery rider previously to "experience what riders have to go through", said it's these experiences that has made him understanding of the hardships and sacrifice most go through.

And it seems despite Ong's hesitancy about his broadcast speech—he described it as "bad"—it seems some netizens have taken a shine to the party.

With some jokes of course.
