In the third constituency political broadcast aired on Sunday evening, July 5, four members from the People's Action Party (PAP) gave a series of speeches that addressed voters in the Jalan Besar GRC that they are contesting in.

1. The Kampong feel

Heng Chee How

"I really appreciate the strong relationship that residents and I have with one another. Across generations as well.

And this same closeness, this feeling of Village, or Kampong, is clearly there and it is so precious."

Denise Phua

"I am the kampong girl from Jalan Besar whose life has been transformed.

I was raised in a rental flat at Boon Keng Road, had a happy childhood. I remember the days where we went to school, my siblings and I, a nearby school, playing hopperty and hide and seek daily with neighbour’s kids.

Our family was not rich but we never felt poor. I remember happy times as a kid– walking to our nearby school, "

Wan Rizal

"I spent my years in the kampong, I remember chasing chickens and climbing trees."

Josephine Teo

"This is why in Jalan Besar, my first priority is to get to know you. In this regard, I’m most grateful to Dr Yaacob Ibrahim and Dr Lily Neo.

Even though they have stepped down, they generously shared what they know with Rizal and I.

This is a true reflection of the strong “kampong spirit” in Jalan Besar – many volunteers and programmes to support our residents."

Rejuvenation

Denise Phua

"6 MRT stations were constructed; 5 CCs were upgraded. 9 markets were upgraded; 36 playgrounds. 55 lift upgrading programmes and home improvement programs, and numerous social service programs."

Josephine Teo

"It is also a place of great rejuvenation, the ABC waters in Kallang, Marina Bay Area, and we are the only GRC where all five MRT lines flow through."

Heng Chee How

"When Ah Boy grows up and wants to set up his own family, I bet you he would want to live near his parents, somewhere in Whampoa perhaps, and certainly in Jalan Besar GRC. And he is more able to do so now than ever before, because HDB has been building more BTOs.

And when he is able to get to live with his parents, what happens is not only is he happy, and his family happy, but the entire town is constantly rejuvenated and revitalised. It is like a tree with deep roots, solid and evergreen."
