Lina Chiam told Mothership that she and veteran opposition Member of Parliament Chiam See Tong are in full support for all the Singapore People's Party (SPP) candidates contesting in the 2020 General Election.

The Chiams, she said, will be "rooting for all our SPP candidates and wish them the best of luck".

She explained that Potong Pasir candidate Jose Raymond has been walking the ground for the past three years, and most residents there would have known him by now.

Lina Chiam also affirmed the work that the SPP team contesting Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC has put in.

She said that the team - led by Steve Chia - have been doing weekly house visits in the area for about two years, and that they have been campaigning "tirelessly and diligently".

Chiam See Tong's history with the SPP

Chiam See Tong represented Potong Pasir in Parliament from 1984 to 2011.

In 2011, Chiam contested in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, while Lina Chiam contested in Potong Pasir. Chiam lost to the PAP team led by then-Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng.

Lina Chiam lost Potong Pasir to PAP candidate Sitoh Yih Pin by 114 votes, but she went on to accept an offer to become a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament.

Lina Chiam said: "I have also walked the ground with Mr Chiam many, many times at [Potong Pasir]. (Our footprints are still imprinted there, haha)"

"[Potong Pasir] residents should not worry too much," added Lina Chiam.

"The ball is round and can go either way but we hope the ball will roll towards SPP and that the results will be in SPP’s favour to bring back once again, a mark of respect for SPP."
