The Workers' Party has uploaded a new video as part of its General Election campaign on June 24.

It had been teased earlier on June 23, less than an hour after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called for an election to be held.

Titled, "The Workers' Party GE2020: Make Your Vote Count", the video featured several of its members speaking at length on their experience of volunteering with the WP and interacting with residents in Singapore.

The members featured are Sylvia Lim (WP Chairman), Dennis Tan (NCMP), Raeesah Khan, Nicole Seah, Yudhishthra Nathan, Lee Li Lian (former Punggol East SMC MP), Jamus Lim, Fadli Fawzi, Cheryl Loh (GE2015 Nee Soon GRC candidate), Kenneth Foo (GE2015 Nee Soon GRC candidate), Leon Perera (NCMP), and Pritam Singh (WP Secretary General).

"Healthy competition breeds better outcomes"

Giving an analogy about the need for more than one political party, Perera said: "For the same reason that there should be more than one telco, more than one car maker, more than one healthcare company, healthy competition breeds better outcomes."

And to win hearts and minds en route to a favourable electoral showing, the WP's political outreach consists of the sale of the party's Hammer Newsletter, as well as the Meet-People-Sessions for its MPs.

In addition, there are also grassroots events, coffee shop walks, and house visits -- events which Pritam labelled as the WP's "bread-and-butter."

It's not easy volunteering for the WP

Both Seah and Sylvia Lim also acknowledged that consistently volunteering for the WP is not easy, however, given the number of activities that are held as part of the WP's outreach.

Seah then highlighted that this is why she is inspired by volunteers for the WP who continue to do such events "week in, week out".

That being said, not all of the events are political in nature, as pointed out by Raeesah.

There are also activities such as food distribution, an event which Jamus Lim said he found "meaningful" as he discovered that he could connect and contribute to the daily lives of residents.

"Many Singaporeans... are warm and often receptive"

Jamus Lim then added that in their interactions with residents, many Singaporeans are "warm and often receptive" to the WP, even those who are initially "a little guarded".

Seah also related an instance where a man's support gave the initial impression of an impending assault:

"We were out on house visits and basically this guy came running up to us and charging at us with an umbrella and we literally thought he was going to attack us. But what happened the next moment was he randomly opened his umbrella and we realise it was a WP umbrella and he was trying to show his support."

The video subsequently concluded with Sylvia Lim calling for Singaporeans to "guard against groupthink" and Perera stating that the basis of unity for Singaporeans should not be a single political party or set of views.
