A Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a superhero short-story comic anthology Singaheroes began on April 27, and has managed to achieve its goal.

Original campaign not funded successfully

The initiative is jointly organised by non-profit art outfit The Fandom Menace, and local comic book publisher CS comics.

The SingaHeroes anthology features stories inspired by or set in Singapore, exploring the idea of the Singaporean superhero.

The comic features more than 30 original Singapore-inspired characters, and aimed to raise S$15,888 to finance the comic book's printing and shipping costs, and pay the artists behind the comic book.

More than 20 local artists and one Malaysian artist are involved in the project.

Special guest writers have also been roped into the production of the comic book anthology, including Kiss92FM DJ Joshua Simon and SGAG producers Fauzi Azzhar and Mark Kinoshita.

Backers could also opt for the special Covid-19 cover edition, where 100 per cent of the profits would go to causes supporting frontliners, and those affected by Covid-19.

While the original campaign concluded on May 28, with just about 50 per cent of the S$15,888 goal, the organisers of the campaign decided to pay the artists out of their own pocket first.

Relaunched campaign to focus on charity aims

The campaign was then relaunched with a few adjustments.

The aim was to sell just the special Covid-19 cover edition, with profits going to local non-profit It's Raining Raincoats, an initiative aimed at improving the lives of migrant workers.

Funded within an hour

The Kickstarter goal has been dropped to a modest S$888, and backers will receive a digital copy of the comic book at S$8 and a physical copy at S$18, down from the original price of S$18 and S$28 in the previous campaign.

The adjusted goal was made possible as the current campaign focuses on producing one version of the comic, and changes to printing material and fees. The relaunched campaign has seen success, with it being fully funded within an hour.

Currently, the relaunched campaign has raised S$2,338 as of the time of writing, but the organisers are hoping to see more support towards the campaign to bring more awareness to local talents and the arts while allowing more of the funds to be directed to It's Raining Raincoats with a higher print run.
