The People's Action Party (PAP), Workers' Party (WP), and People's Voice (PV) are set to face one another in the tiny Punggol West Single Member Constituency (SMC) this upcoming general election.

Punggol West SMC is one of the new constituencies, carved out of Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC), and is a ward currently overseen by PAP Member of Parliament Sun Xueling.

The SMC is home to 25,440 voters.

On June 25, PV's leader Lim Tean announced that his party will be fielding its candidates in five constituencies, including Punggol West SMC.

The other four constituencies are Jalan Besar GRC, Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC, Pioneer SMC, and Mountbatten SMC.

Lim wrote that "no party has given more to opposition unity than PV has".

He also said he hoped that all opposition parties will see a "resounding and historic victory" come July 11.

Earlier on June 19, Lim had indicated an interest in Jurong GRC, although that appears to have been taken off the list.

Workers' Party to run in Punggol West too

On the same day (June 25), WP announced that they will be running in six constituencies, including Punggol West SMC.

The other five constituencies are Aljunied GRC, Marine Parade GRC, Sengkang GRC, East Coast GRC, and Hougang SMC.

Party leader Pritam Singh revealed this during a press conference, where he introduced four candidates:

  • Louis Chua Kheng Wee, 33
  • Mohammad Azhar Abdul Latip, 34
  • Nicole Seah, 33
  • Yee Jenn Jong, 55

A three-cornered fight suggests a heightened risk of losing one's election deposit.

To keep the deposit, one has to attain at least 12.5 per cent of the votes cast.

In 2015, PAP won the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC with 72.89 per cent against the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA).

The six-member team consisted of Sun Xueling, Teo Chee Hean, Janil Puthucheary, Ng Chee Meng, Teo Ser Luck, and Zainal Sapari.

The deposit for a SMC this election is S$13,500.
