Man, 34, arrested for loanshark harassment after allegedly locking resident's gate at Punggol Drive unit

A 34-year-old man has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

Secured gate of unit with padlock and chain

On Jun. 3, the police said that they received a report of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Punggol Drive.

The gate of the unit was secured with a padlock and a chain, and affixed with a debtor's note.

Through investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man.

He was arrested on Jun. 11.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in similar cases reported island-wide.

Also investigated for breaching safe distancing measures

Police added that the man will also be investigated for breaching safe distancing measures under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

He will be charged in court on Jun. 13 under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010).

If found guilty, he will face a fine of not less than S$5,000 and not more than S$50,000.

He will also face a mandatory jail term of up to five years, and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.

Police advised members of the public to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way.
