The new Covid-19 outbreak in the Chinese capital of Beijing is expected to ease by the end of this week, Global Times reported.

The achievement is the result of "quick, strict measures" that have effectively curbed the spread of the virus after cases related to the Xinfadi wholesale market were discovered, the Chinese media said, citing "experts".

Single-digit cases first time in a week

The city has reported nine new Covid-19 cases on Monday, June 22, with five asymptomatic cases, as of Sunday night.

China does not include asymptomatic cases in its tally of confirmed cases.

This is the first time the city has reported single-digit cases in more than a week.

Path of contagion can be effectively cut off in Beijing, unlike Wuhan

Yang Zhanqiu, deputy director of the pathogen biology department in Wuhan University, said while "sporadic cases may be reported", there will not be days with "dozens of new cases".

This is because unlike the outbreak in Wuhan, "the path of contagion of the clustered infections in Xinfadi market is clear", which is why human-to-human transmission can be "effectively cut off in a timely way".

249 new Covid-19 cases since June 11

Beijing reported 13 new Covid-19 cases a day later on Tuesday, June 23, and an additional asymptomatic case, as of Monday night.

The city has reported 249 new Covid-19 cases since June 11, when the discovery of new cases broke a 56-day Covid-19 free streak.

New hot spot

On Sunday, June 21, a PepsiCo Inc. factory has emerged as a new hot spot in the city as well, Caixin reported.

Fan Zhimin, the head of publicity at PepsiCo's Greater China branch, said the factory had ceased operations immediately upon discovering the cases, sealed off products, quarantined staff and disinfected the premises.

Tests are also underway to determine product safety.

Globally, the total number of Covid-19 cases has surpassed 9 million.

The figure doubled in just five weeks as countries such as Brazil, the United States, and India saw a recent surge of new cases, DW News reported.
