A resident of Yishun helped the SCDF extinguish a burning taxi by spraying water from his third-floor flat, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

The 29-year-old man, who was only identified by the surname Mai, told the paper that he heard three explosions at the time of the incident and rushed from the toilet to use a hose to spray water onto the vehicle below.

The fire occurred at about 10.35am, at the carpark of Blk 257, along Yishun Ring Road.

A video of the incident was also uploaded to the Facebook page All Singapore Stuff, in which a hose can be seen spraying water out of a window, onto the burning taxi below.

What happened?

The video appears to have been filmed from a flat overlooking the carpark. It begins with a few people gathering at a distance from the taxi. A shout of "Fire, fire!" can also be heard.

A person is then seen pulling a hose towards the burning taxi, while a police car drives onto the scene.

Afterwards, a police officer uses a fire extinguisher on the flames. An explosive sound is also heard.

The video then shows water being sprayed onto the roof of the taxi from above and cuts to several firefighters who, having arrived in the carpark, started extinguishing the fire.

At the two minute and 45 second mark, the video also shows water being sprayed out of a hose from a flat onto the flames, and concludes with the firefighters inspecting the engine of the taxi.

Continued spraying water on the burning taxi, even after firefighters arrived

Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, Mai said that the SCDF had arrived on the scene after about 15 minutes, and that he had continued spraying water onto the taxi, along with his 73-old-father in order to help the firefighters.

The fire was put out in about five minutes.

He added that he had not been thinking too much at the time of the incident, until SCDF personnel came to thank him for helping.

A total of two hoses were used by the firefighters to extinguish the flames. No injuries were reported.

Mothership has also reached out to SCDF for more information on the matter.
