Old Chang Kee customers queue patiently at 7:20pm so that makciks can break fast

May this story be as warm as the curry puff you just bought.

Covid-19 has forced people to be on the move and not loiter around.

The restrictions mean people are meant to buy stuff and move on, without the luxury of lurking around.

In times like this, a little more patience and empathy is definitely much appreciated.

Waited patiently for Old Chang Kee staff to break fast

Local comedian Rishi Budrani shared a wholesome experience he experienced while queuing at an Old Chang Kee outlet on May 12 evening.

Rishi recalled that when he arrived at the store he saw there was no one at the front counter initially.

He then noticed the two staff members were eating in the kitchen.

After looking at the time, he realised they were having their Iftar.

Subsequently, another customer arrived and Rishi gestured to him that the makciks, meaning "Malay women", were eating.

Without having to explain the situation, the customer understood what was happening and the two of them waited patiently in the queue.

In the meanwhile, the makciks were able to enjoy their short respite with ease.

As the Old Chang Kee staff chatted and laughed over their simple snacks, their joy also infected Rishi, who watched and found it to be a "refreshing sight" amid this trying period:

"I guess in a time where people are slashing each other in Chinatown, doxxing each other for misbehaving in public or complaining about how their delivery riders are late, it was a refreshing sight to watch two Mak-ciks break their fast with fruits and kuehs; as they chatted and laughed; as they inadvertently shared a moment of hope and joy with two unassuming bystanders.

And, for a split-second at least, it seemed like life was normal; no Covid-19, no circuit breaker; no pandemic."

He then extended this warm and fuzziness that he felt to others with this Facebook post which has garnered more than 2,600 shares:
