On May 12, the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that a 50-year-old male Thai national (Case 23908) and a 31-year-old male Indian national (Case 24013) had passed away of causes separate from Covid-19.

The 31-year-old Indian man has been identified as Ramachandran Chandhiramohan by local initiative ItsRainingRaincoats.

Died after complaining of chest pain

Ramachandran had collapsed in his dormitory after complaining of chest pain, and was only confirmed to have Covid-19 after his death, on May 11.

MOH has labelled his cause of death as coronary thrombosis, which is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel of the heart.

In a Facebook post on Sunday (May 15), ItsRainingRaincoats shared that Ramachandran had been working as a construction worker in Singapore for eight years and thanked him for his contributions.

The post also said that his elderly parents had sold their land in order to send him to work in Singapore, and had been dependent on him.

ItsRainingRaincoats said that they are in touch with his family, and asked for prayers to help his parents "find the strength to carry on and for his soul to Rest In Peace."

9 individuals with Covid-19 have died of non-Covid-19 causes

Ramachandran is one of nine individuals found to have Covid-19 in Singapore who have been confirmed to have died of reasons unrelated to Covid-19.

Prior to May 11, six individuals found to be infected with Covid-19 had been announced to have died of causes other than Covid-19, four of which were related to heart issues.

On May 11, MOH announced two deaths — that of a 68-year-old male Singapore Citizen (Case 1305) and a 53-year-old Indian national (Case 23550).

The death of the 68-year-old Singaporean was classified to be from complications due to Covid-19 infection, but the Indian national's death was found to be caused by ruptured myocardial infarction due to coronary thrombosis.

Then, on May 12, the deaths of Ramachandran and the 50-year-old Thai national were announced by MOH.

The Thai national was found to have died of a cerebral haemorrhage, while Ramachandran's cause of death was declared to be coronary thrombosis.

Studies in the U.S., China, and elsewhere have found an abnormally high prevalence of heart problems and blood clotting amongst younger Covid-19 patients, indicating they could be linked to the viral infection.

In a statement given to Mothership on May 9, an MOH spokesperson said:

"The Ministry of Health reports all deaths in patients infected with Covid-19. However, we add to the Covid-19 death count the cases where the attending doctor or pathologist attribute the primary or underlying cause of death as due to Covid-19 infection.

This has been our consistent practice, applied for both Singaporeans and foreigners in Singapore. It is consistent with international practice for classifying deaths."
