Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will deliver his May Day Message online on Thursday, April 30 at 7:30pm.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said in a media statement that a physical May Day Rally will not happen this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PM Lee's May Day Message will be shown on national television and streamed across several social media channels including the Prime Minister Office’s Facebook page and YouTube, and NTUC Singapore’s Facebook page and YouTube.

May Day events to be done differently

The labour movement said several key May Day events would be done differently this year and it has been reviewing the celebrations events slated for late April until June.

Besides the May Day Message getting booted online, the Covid-19 pandemic has thwarted the gathering of more than 1,500 labour movement leaders and tripartite partners who would gather at NTUC’s May Day Rally every year.

The annual rite sees them reaffirm their commitment to advance the interests of their workers.

The May Day Awards and the May Day Fiesta have also been cancelled.

NTUC said it will appreciate the contributions of domestic workers and migrant workers this year via the use of online platforms.

NTUC president Mary Liew, NTUC secretary-general Ng Chee Meng, Manpower Minister Josephine Teo and Singapore National Employers Federation president Robert Yap will helm a closed-door virtual dialogue session.

NTUC said about 500 participants are expected to tune in remotely.
