S'pore cinemas to close temporarily but offer refunds & movie voucher extensions for affected patrons

Golden Village, Shaw Theatres, Cathay Cineplexes, The Projector, and WE Cinemas have all announced their plans for closure.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Tuesday, Mar. 24, that all cinemas will be closed from Thursday, Mar. 26, 2020, 11:59pm.

The closure falls under tighter measures to minimise the further spread of Covid-19 in Singapore.

Other establishments affected include the closure of all bars and entertainment venues including night clubs, discos, theatres, and karaoke outlets, where there is a high risk of transmission due to sustained close contact over a period of time.

Cinemas announce closure, offer refunds

Cinemas in Singapore have announced their closure in accordance with MOH's announcement, and shared details on how affected ticket holders could obtain refunds.

Golden Village

Golden Village will close its cinemas will close from Friday, Mar. 27 till Thursday, Apr. 30, according to a post on their Facebook page.

Refunds

Online ticket purchases will be automatically refunded within four weeks.

For tickets purchased via the box office or Automated Ticketing Machines, ticket holders can hold on to them for a refund when the cinemas reopen.

Golden Village said that it would also be extending the validity of their vouchers and prepaid cards to provide sufficient time for them to be redeemed.

Shaw Theatres

Shaw Theatres will close from Friday, Mar. 27 till Thursday, Apr. 30 inclusive, according to a notice on Shaw Theatres's website.

Refunds

Online and credit card purchases will be refunded automatically within for weeks.

For tickets paid for with cash or via NETSPay, ticket holders are to hold on to the ticket stubs, for refunds to be made when the box office is back in operation.

Cathay Cineplexes

Cathay Cineplexes will close from 11:59pm on Thursday, Mar. 26, till Thursday, Apr. 30 inclusive, according to a notice on its website.

Refunds

Online ticket purchases will be automatically refunded within four weeks.

Those with physical tickets can retain their tickets, receipts, or both and request for a refund when the cinemas reopen.

Cathay Cineplexes also said that it would extend the validity of Cathay Cineplexes vouchers. The types of vouchers are:

  • Everyday Movie Vouchers.
  • Gift Vouchers.
  • Platinum Movie Suites Vouchers.
  • F&B Vouchers.
  • Senior Vouchers.

The Projector

The Projector will close from Friday, Mar. 27 till Thursday, Apr. 30 inclusive, according to a post on their Telegram channel on Mar. 24.

The post said that The Projector would be rescheduling its programme, and that it would "get in touch with existing ticket-holders soon".

WE Cinemas

WE Cinemas will close from Friday, Mar. 27 till Thursday, Apr. 30 inclusive, according to a notice on its website.

Refunds

Affected ticket holders need to email WE Cinemas at [email protected] with their booking number in order to get a refund.

Those who purchased tickets at the box office were asked to keep their tickets stubs, for refunds to be made when the cinema is back in operation.

WE Cinemas added that it would be extending the validity of vouchers or movie gift cards that are expiring.

Affected patrons would need to email [email protected] with the serial number of their voucher.

Filmgarde Cineplexes
