A fake email has been circulating recently, with some rather strange content.

Invitation to dinner with politicians

The email reportedly consists of an invitation to receivers for a dinner event with President Halimah Yacob, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Cabinet ministers.

The email also stated that the event takes place on March 10, 2020.

It is uncertain where the location of the dinner was purported to be, or if the email disclosed this.

President Halimah then took to Facebook to warn social media users of the phishing email.

According to her, the email "coaxes" receivers to download the invitation letter via a web-based collaborative platform Sharepoint.

Users are then required to key in their email password.

Email is a hoax

A few Facebook users affirmed in the comments section of President Halimah's post that they too had received the email.

One woman even revealed that the email domain was istana.gov.sg.

It is unknown if the email domain is fake.

President Halimah then clarified that the email is a hoax.

She also said that the fake email has been reported to the police.

Police confirmed with Mothership that a report was lodged, and investigations are ongoing.

President Halimah subsequently urged everyone to "remain vigilant" against phishing and online scams, and to familiarise themselves with the tell-tale signs of such phishing emails so as not to fall prey to "these malicious cyber threats".

Phishing is an attempt to obtain sensitive information, such as names, passwords, and credit card details from the victim.

The scammers usually disguise themselves as well-known or trustworthy corporations over electronic communications.
