Bad news for fans of cars, aviation, or a combination of the two.

Malaysia's flying car was scheduled for a test flight on Nov. 21, but it will not go ahead.

Too near the airport

On Nov. 20, a Facebook post by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia(CAAM) stated that the test flight has been restricted.

This is because the location of the test flight, UNIKL MIAT Hangar Subang, is less than 200 metres away from the Subang Airport Terminal Control Zone.

This zone, and the associated commercial airline and helicopter traffic, are under strict supervision of Air Traffic Control.

Said CAAM:

"As much as CAAM supports the development of the aerospace industry in Malaysia, test and demonstration flights must be carried out in accordance with the Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulation 2016 (MCAR 2016) to ensure safety."

Demonstration was closed to the public

Earlier, Minister for Entrepreneur Development Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof had said that while MPs are invited to witness the launch, it was not open to the public.

Said Mohd Redzuan, according to the Malaysian Reserve:

"This is an initiative by young people to create an industry for others to follow. I don’t think I can disclose where it will be. It is a closed invitation on a private initiative by the company.

They are looking to alleviate themselves to another level, to get capital, so I cannot get public perception to compromise their standing because they are en route towards success, so to speak."

Permitted to fly in China

CAAM noted that the flying car did have a permit to fly within China.

It was granted a Special Flight Permit by its State of Design (Civil Aviation Administration of China), which limits it to conduct Research & Development Flights in the Grand World Science Park, Guangzhou.

However, as it does not have a similar permit in Malaysia, the CAAM is investigating the demonstration flight that was carried out on Nov. 15.
