It might be convenient, but it's illegal.

Telegram has become a platform for less-than-legal activities in Singapore nowadays.

SG BikeTaxi is a Telegram channel which offers a platform to link motorcyclists and riders for motorcycle rides -- basically a hitching service, but with motorcycles.

In the group, bikers will advertise their availability for rides while passengers will put up requests for rides.

They will typically list their pick up and drop off points and time of pick up, before waiting for a match.

Bikers and passengers are free to negotiate the price, but from what can be seen in the group, prices can as high as S$15 -- as much as a private hire car ride.

Members of the group were also warned not to mention that there are monetary transactions involved if they were ever stopped on the road.

According to The Straits Times, the group had slightly over 2,000 members as of Oct. 22, 2019.

For those who have travelled to cities like Bangkok and Vietnam, this is nothing new.

In fact, you can book these services legally in these cities using platforms like Grab.

However, it is illegal for motorcycles to ferry passengers for hire and reward in Singapore.

The Land Transport Authority said that motorcyclists who offer ferrying services may have their motorbike insurance coverage declared void.

Instead, the authority advises commuters to use taxis or licensed private-hire cars for their transportation needs.
