Nas Daily a.k.a. Nuseir Yassin has been reminded to abide by the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices and the Fair Consideration Framework.

The Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP) told The Straits Times on Friday, Aug. 23 that Yassin has also acknowledged that he might have given people the wrong impression in his Facebook post that excluded Singaporeans from being considered for a job in his company.

This closes the loop on the latest kerfuffle involving Nas Daily in Singapore.

Made job posting clearer

A TAFEP spokesperson said Yassin acknowledged he could have been clearer in his job posting to avoid misunderstanding.

The employment practice watchdog said Yassin has been reminded to give Singaporeans "due consideration" for positions in his Singapore company.

Nas Daily company hired Singapore

The spokesperson said: "He has explained the posting was to seek a candidate to fill a position of video maker whose work would be fully in Vietnam, although the training would be in Singapore. His Singapore company would not be employing the person."

The watchdog has observed that Yassin had already hired a few Singaporeans.

Yassin had also been putting up job advertisements on LinkedIn and the Nas Daily Singapore Facebook page inviting Singaporeans to apply for jobs here.

What guidelines do

The guidelines that apply to all Singapore-based jobs have spelt out what can and cannot be mentioned.

Words and phrases that exclude Singaporeans or indicate a preference for non-Singaporeans should not be used in job ads.

The framework is to ensure fair hiring requirements for companies in Singapore, including advertising in Workforce Singapore's Jobs Bank.

"As employers in Singapore are aware, those found with discriminatory hiring practices will have their work pass privileges curtailed," the TAFEP spokesperson said.

Background

TAFEP was looking into a posting by Yassin on Aug. 12 to hire a video maker.

The job ad was posted on the Nas Daily Vietnamese Facebook page, which now has 110,400 followers.

Yassin asked job seekers to e-mail their applications to him.

He even offered a US$500 (S$692) reward to the person who shared the post with the successful job applicant.

He later clarified on Facebook that his Singapore company is looking to hire a Vietnamese who will be based in Vietnam after being trained here for a few months.

Yassin, a 27-year-old Arab-Israeli, moved to Singapore in April to set up the Nas Daily Media Company.
