A well-loved uncle who sells roti kaya in Penang, Malaysia received a touching tribute from the community—a large wall mural.

Roti uncle loved by all

One street artist, Acit Raman Abdullah, shared the fond memories he had of the local roti uncle, known as Muniandi.

In a post on Facebook, Acit revealed that Muniandi was beloved by the local community in the town of Balik Pulau, an area which the man frequented for the past 30 years selling his wares of fresh bread on his motorbike.

The 56-year-old was apparently a "legend" in the town, and Acit stated that residents from different races were all familiar with him.

To honour Muniandi and show some appreciation for his hard work over the decades, Acit collaborated with a fellow street artist, Andhar A Samah, to create a giant mural.

According to Malay Mail, Acit stated that when he approached Muniandi at his house about his plans for the mural, the man could still recognise him, and could recall where Acit's house was in the past.

“I went to his home to approach him about doing the mural. Before I could even introduce myself, he said he knew where my house was back in the day.

“I never expected him to remember me. I feel so touched."

The beautiful mural was ultimately dedicated to Muniandi, and featured the man himself.

Acit's story of Muniandi and his pictures of the mural have since gone viral on Facebook, racking up 2,000 shares and 7,000 likes.

A man of hard work

In a subsequent post by Muniandi's daughter, who goes by ML MV on Facebook, she revealed that the bread-seller would toil long hours in the past few decades.

Muniandi would rise at 8:30am everyday and leave the house to sell bread. At noon, he would tend to his farm, return home for a short half-hour nap, and then leave again for a second round of selling bread.

He would only arrive home late at night.

ML MV proceeded to praise the sacrifices her father had made, in order to raise his children to be the doctor, engineer and lawyer they are now.

Hats off to Muniandi.
