Malaysia's prime minister-in waiting Anwar Ibrahim has denied he is behind the gay sex videos and its circulation, according to The Malaysian Insight.

Anwar also said he was surprised that his aide, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, has been arrested in relation to the case, The Straits Times reported.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, July 17, Anwar, who was implicated in a sodomy case decades ago, said he does not know why Farhash was arrested, but said the police have their own reasons for doing so.

Azmin should resign if allegations are true: Anwar

Furthermore, he said a day before on July 16, that if investigations conclude that Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali was indeed one of the men in the video, he should resign, reported Malaysiakini.

He had previously said his party, the People’s Justice Party, or Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), is not going to question Azmin, who is also his deputy, about the videos, according to The Malaysian Insight.

Azmin had denied he was the man in the videos together with Haziq Aziz, the principal private secretary to the Deputy Minister of Primary Industries and Commodities.

Two other suspects were arrested along with Farhash on July 16.

Previously on July 14, Haziq and five other suspects were arrested.

Azmin not a threat to me: Anwar

In response to claims that Azmin presents a growing threat to his position, Anwar has denied viewing Azmin as a threat to his succession plan.

Azmin has grown noticeably closer to Mahathir recently.

The claims also alleged Anwar's supporters were behind the sex scandal to topple Azmin, which Anwar dismissed by saying there is no need for his supporters to do so as he had an agreement with Mahathir "as recently as last week", according to Malay Mail.

Anwar added that he also has the support from all four parties in Pakatan Harapan to become the next prime minister.

Commenting on the arrests, Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on July 17 that the release of the videos was a political plot to "prevent somebody from being able to succeed in politics", The Star reported.

He also said that Azmin does not have to leave, unless proven guilty.
