In case you're looking for something to do this weekend, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is having a series of Chinese New Year programmes for the family.

Here are some of the more exciting events we picked out.

1. Take a crash course in lion dancing

The Feng Yi Dragon and Lion Dance Entertainment troupe will be conducting crash courses for lion dance performances on January 12, Saturday at the SCCC Ho Bee Concourse. There you will be taught the basics of lion dance, and practise working as a team to execute a performance.

Members of the public can join a slot from 3.30pm to 5.30pm while parents and their kids can take a morning session from 11.30am to 1.30pm.

Admission is free and interested participants have to pre-register.

2. Upcycle your old stuff into new craft

Terra SG, an eco-outreach social enterprise, will be holding workshops on January 12 and 13 on how to reuse your old stuff to create something of higher value. There you will learn how to create the following craft:

  • Upcycled Pallet Board Yarn Art: 10am, 11am, 2.30pm, 3.15pm
  • Upcycled Fabric Tissue Pouch: 12pm, 12.30pm, 1pm
  • Upcycled Red Container Night Light: 4pm, 4.40pm, 5.20pm

At the same time, Terra SG is holding a collection drive for recycling. Items such as milk and juice paper cartons, 2-litre plastic bottles, small PET bottles, disused t-shirts and short and round glass jars are welcome.

The workshops are held at SSSCI Multi-Purpose Hall, Level 7. Admission is free and interested participants have to pre-register.
