For some students, school can be of existential importance, even in the midst of a harrowing ordeal.

The first thing that an 11-year-old girl did, while trapped in a lift with the alarm ringing, was to ask her mother via phone call to inform her school that she will be late for class, Lianhe Wanbao (WB) reported.

The incident happened on Jan. 14 at Blk 919 along Jurong West Street 91, at around 7am in the morning.

Daughter covering ears from the sound of the alarm

The girl's mother, Mrs Xu, has written in to WB, to recount the story of her daughter's ordeal.

Her daughter, Huang, had taken the lift down from the 13th floor, where the family lives, to go to school.

WB quoted Xu stating that she only found out what had happened to Huang when she received a text message from her, about ten minutes afterwards.

Xu then called Huang, who promptly responded by asking her to inform the school teacher that she will be late for class as she is trapped in a lift.

WB quoted Xu stating that she had called a hotline number outside the elevator, only to be transferred to a voicemail instead. This resulted in her calling the town council directly.

Xu added that her daughter told her over the phone that she could not find a helpline within the lift.

Trapped in the lift for 30 minutes

Subsequently, two technicians arrived ten minutes later to rescue Huang.

WB reported that in total, Huang had been trapped for 30 minutes in the lift.

Huang described to WB how she had entered the lift and pressed the first floor, only for the lift to rise instead, then come to a stop.

Huang added that she could hear someone pressing the lift button downstairs and that such an action would result in the lift rising a little more.

The elevator alarm then went off, scaring Huang, whereupon she immediately took out her phone to try and reach her mother for help.

Xu added that the entire ordeal had frightened her daughter and that Huang eventually reached school, 15 minutes late.

Let's hope the girl had a speedy recovery from her experience.
