Guy in S'pore looking for woman to marry on paper just to buy BTO flat

The rules have been laid out. What are you going to do about it?

In Singapore, it is a well-known life trajectory for couples to apply for a BTO flat, get married and settle down in said flat.

This is also probably one of the more common ways for young people to own a place of their own.

One guy, however, is attempting to game the system.

Get married in order to buy a HDB flat

An anonymous submission to Facebook page SIM Confessions on Jan. 14 called for interested women to consider getting married out of convenience to apply for a BTO flat together.

But this guy isn't looking for love.

Claiming he is 27 years old, the person who wrote the post explained his rationale: He did not wish to "waste S$500 on rent every month" and would much rather prefer "paying double for [his] own property".

He clarified that the marriage would purely be on paper, and the lady would be free to "date other guys".

He even added that the lady could take the "room with the attached bathroom" and "bring [her] boyfriend back" to the flat.

This is his post:

Different from sham marriages

There are laws against sham marriages in Singapore involving a Singaporean and a foreign national.

These marriages involve monetary transactions, and are arrangements that allow the foreign national to continue staying in Singapore.

In comparison, marriages of convenience between two Singaporeans (as suggested by the anonymous poster) are technically not illegal.

Both parties are only required to present their marriage certificate before they can collect the keys to their flat.

Gaming the system

There are plenty of regulations surrounding flat ownership in Singapore, but this certainly isn't the first time where people have thought about gaming the system.

Last year, a married couple allegedly agreed to get a divorce just so that one of them can purchase a flat to rent out:

Talk about how rules are meant to be broken.
