A student in Singapore tasked with ordering basketball team jackets on behalf of her peers, has not seen the order materialise after paying more than S$1,200 to the vendor.

Timeline of events

The student, Ng Yong Yi, was looking for a vendor to make some jackets for her basketball team for a competition in July 2018.

She was introduced to the vendor, Jason, earlier in the year on Jan. 27.

A friend had made the recommendation, having previously ordered her team's jersey from the vendor.

Things appeared to be going quite well initially.

Ng updated the vendor in June about the order, which was a month before the basketball competition.

She was quoted a price of S$32 for one jacket.

It was an order which the vendor appeared confident of fulfilling, and Ng proceeded to make the email order on June 14.

Jason gave a time frame of two to three weeks to prepare the order.

Problems start to arise

The first hints of an issue arose during the payment phase.

According to Ng, Jason insisted on payment in full first, as he needed to buy materials:

"He explained that I will have to pay in full first before they start manufacturing because they need the money to be in to buy the materials first. I was hesitant at first but I went to ask my (friend) who has ordered from him last year and she told me that her team also paid in full first before they recieved their windbreakers."

After some assurance by her friend who had dealt with the vendor before, Ng decided to transfer the money of over S$1,200 to get the orders started.

The upfront payment, however, appeared to dull the frequency of the vendor's replies though.

A time frame to fulfill the order in two to three weeks then became fulfilling the order by July 16 to 19.

Which then became July 20.

And then prolonged absence.

Before shifting the goalpost to the end of the week of July 23, which by then, the basketball season had ended.

To very soon.

And more silence.

And finally, lol.

Police report

Ng told Mothership that she had exhausted all her options in trying to get the money back.

She had even made a trip down to the physical store itself, but found that it had closed.

She then learnt from neighbouring shops that the store had been closed for a while.

Ng then proceeded to file a police report.

She then made a Facebook post about her ordeal dealing with the vendor who has since ghosted her.

As the time of writing this article, Ng informs us that the vendor, Jason, had not contacted her yet.

We have reached out to the vendor, and will update the article once he replies.
