ASOS marketplace sells SQ girl sarong kebaya as "vintage piece", styles it with inner tube showing

Not a good look.

As a prominent element of Singapore Airlines' marketing, the sarong kebaya of an SQ girl is as iconic as it is classic.

In fact, its image is so strictly guarded by our flagship national carrier that cabin crew are not allowed to upload photos of themselves wearing the uniform.

That, however, isn't stopping an e-store on ASOS Marketplace from hawking what they claim to be an "authentic" set of the kebaya and styling it, ahem, differently.

The two-piece, which is going for £25 (S$44.74), is being marketed as "authentic" and vintage".

Here are some photos of the model wearing it:

The above is presumably cropped to show the skirt's waistline.

In another photos, the top is styled open, with an inner tube showing:

Side-note for non-online shoppers: in case you're wondering, ASOS Marketplace is where small business owners sell their items, and is sort of a spin-off of online fashion store ASOS.

Under the Terms and Conditions page, however, there is a disclaimer that ASOS Marketplace does not pre-screen any content or information provided by users, in addition to the fact that they have no control over the quality and legality of the items:

ASOS Marketplace is not directly involved in the transactions between buyers and sellers. As a result, ASOS Marketplace has no control over the quality, safety, morality or legality of any aspect of the items listed, the truth or accuracy of the listings, the ability of sellers to sell items or the ability of buyers to pay for items.

This means that even if the kebaya turns out to be inauthentic, the company can't do anything about it.

An actual Kebaya

Just for comparison, here's how the actual SQ girls look:

The sarong kebaya was first introduced in 1968 and updated in 1972 by Pierre Balmain, a French haute couture designer.

At the same time, the term "Singapore Girl" was coined, and remains synonymous with the SQ girl's polished and elegant image, as well as outstanding service.

Guess the wild child look just doesn't go nicely with it.
