Taxi drivers have long been hailed for their nuggets of wisdom and incisive takes on reality.

This was perhaps the maxim that BBC had in mind when they set out to interview Singapore's legendary taxi drivers.

Or you can watch a trailer of it:

In a two-minute 50-second video, several taxi drivers were interviewed for their thoughts on North Korea, Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, US President Donald Trump, what the summit means for Singapore, and ultimately, the Korean Peninsula.

What makes this video funny is that the taxi drivers delivered their replies without hesitation and in their Singaporean accent, with colloquialisms on full display for an international audience, while not detracting from the meaningfulness of their replies.

We pick out some of the more interesting replies below:

On what the summit means for the drivers and Singapore

The video starts out humorous at first with the first driver going:

  • "I expect busy," there is a pause, followed by tapping, "for me."

He subsequently adds with much enthusiasm:

  • "What I think about this summit, this is actually a PLUS," he pauses to draw the plus sign in the air before finishing, "point."

Another driver states:

  • "It's a very good advertisement for Singapore. It brings awareness to the world about the existence of this small little island."

On Kim Jong-un and North Korea

In another enthusiastic reply about why Singapore was chosen, the first driver had this to say about North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un:

  • "I think Singapore is lucky because first they want to choose Geneva. BUT!" he snorts, "His[Kim Jong-un] aeroplane cannot go ah. His aeroplane cannot reach ah!"

He also wonders about Kim's hotel accomodation:

  • "You cannot expect North Korea to pay ah? But I don't understand ah, they have money to shoot rocket ah but no money to stay hotel."

On Donald Trump

In response to whether Kim or Trump was worse, a taxi driver in a checkered shirt replied with laughter, followed by:

He then gives his opinion on Trump:

  • "Now I think he's very clever now!" he laughs again.

On what the summit means for the Korean Peninsula

The video then takes a turn for the serious at this point, all the way to its conclusion, with the taxi drivers becoming more contemplative and hopeful that things for the Koreans will improve as a result of the summit.

Below are some of the more poignant replies:

  • "I am happy that they agreed to talk together, to have a peaceful, instead of a war."
  • "After all, North Korea and South Korea, they are just like brothers. After all, is from the same soil, same land...I think they should be eventually get together."
  • "There is an example to look at - East and West Berlin. And it's interesting huh? So, if they can overcome their problem, of course it takes a while, I'm sure Korea can do the same if they have the determination."

Thanks for letting our taxi uncles have their moment in the spotlight, BBC.
