Kim Jong-un, supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, has made his first international visit since assuming power in 2011.

According to a report by What's On Weibo, the visit and the meeting between Kim and Chinese President Xi Jinping garnered huge interest on the microblogging social network.

The hashtag Xi Jinping Meets Kim Jong-un” (#习近平会见金正恩#) was viewed nearly 38 million times by March 28.

However, users noticed that online coverage about the event was "tightly controlled".

Some news articles about the event were unable to be viewed late on March 28, and comment sections only showed "carefully selected comments".

And that's not all.

According to China Digital Times several "sensitive phrases", mostly to do with Kim's weight, were blocked altogether on Weibo.

Their editors noticed that the following terms were blocked, for both posting and searching, on the days leading up to Kim's visit:

  • Xi + Fat (习+胖)
  • Xi + Pig (习+猪)
  • Kim + Three + Fat (金+三+胖)
  • Kim + Three + Pig (金+三+猪)
  • Kim + Three + Fat (金+三+肥)

"Third Fatty" is a popular nickname for Kim in China.

Searching those terms on March 28 apparently resulted in this:

We tried searching one of the terms (Kim Three Fat) in Weibo on March 29, and also could not find any results:

This isn't new when it comes to Weibo.

In the past, the site has blocked searches related to epic eyerolls and netizens can be paid to report "undesirable" content.

Unfortunately for other pudgy folks, not everyone can enjoy a social media blackout for jabs at their weight.
