Who knew that our National Pledge, from being a mundane part of our morning assembly routine in school, could become interesting enough to be part of the elite fashion world?

As part of a special Singaporean-themed exhibition, bags and shirts printed with our very own National Pledge can be found in the Yohji Yamamoto Aoyama main store in Tokyo, which is designed by Yamamoto himself.

This is what it looks like:

Here's the same design on a shirt:

In addition to his signature scrawled across the bottom, Yamamoto also included the word "Singapura", which happens to also be the name of the entire collection.

The design mainly features the interlinked arms of 4 men of different races, as well as three sentences from our pledge.

It reads:

Pledge ourselves as One United People,

regardless of Race,

Language or Religion,

to build a Democratic Society.

Yohji what?

Most fashion conscious hypebeasts Singaporeans might be more familiar with Yamamoto's work through his pieces from Y-3, which is located at the Mandarin Gallery in Orchard.

Popular favourites from the brand include their futuristic-looking sneakers and avant-garde deconstructed streetwear with bold, singular colours and asymmetrical cutting and layering.

Inspired by Singapore’s cross-cultural and multiracial society, the fashion brand hopes that with Singapore as the theme of this special exhibition, the message of peace can be conveyed to Japanese society.

Their exclusive lookbook for the 2018 Spring-Summer men's collection was also all fully shot in Singapore, by none other than the esteemed Singaporean photographer Leslie Kee, who's based in Japan.

It's interesting to see the Singapore Pledge being incorporated into designer fashion.

Unfortunately, however, the shirt and tote bag are currently only available in Japan at the moment.

But who knows, it's after all not yet that time of year for you to want to wear the pledge on your shirt anyway, right?
